International studies clearly demonstrate that increased tele-density, particularly in rural areas, contributes directly to greater economic development. Independent shared infrastructure fundamentally enhances the rate of expansion and reduces the cost of wireless telecommunications. IMIL’s approach to telecommunications infrastructure is helping transform India by:
- creating efficiencies that reduce operating expenses for mobile telecommunications operators thereby enabling lower tariffs for mobile telephone users
- enabling faster and more efficient expansion of wireless telecommunications coverage into rural and under or un-served regions of India to enhance economic and social development
- facilitating expansion of operator coverage areas by making shareable tower space available and thereby providing better service (and fewer coverage gaps) to subscribers
- diminishing downtime for operators, improving service to mobile telephone users
- moderating long-term environmental concerns over site proliferation by consolidating and rationalizing new tower builds
- potentially increasing competition (and lowering prices) by enabling several mobile telephone operators to offer service in areas where in the past the market was defined by a single service provider
